IELTS examination is structured in such way that it is easy to access and understand by all stakeholders. IELTS Score

The scoring in IELTS examination is done on a scale of 0-9 called bands. The final score report will have the individual bands a test-taker has achieved for each modules as well the overall band score for the entire IELTS test.  The results for the computer. based version of the test will be out within 5-7 days whereas the results for the paper-based one will take at least 13 working days to be out.  The scores will be valid for 2 years from the date of their reporting. The official score reports will be available for the test-taker in electronic as well as paper versions.

The IELTS Cut off Score

Though there is no officially designated passing score, there are certain benchmarks that are set by customs and practices over the years. A band of 7 is considered a safe score to have because it enables you to get into most of the colleges and workplaces which you have applied to. If you score more than 8 band in all  four modules then your English proficiency is excellent. Getting a 9 in all 4 modules is difficult though not impossible. A band score of 9 in all 4 modules will indicate that your proficiency in English language is on par with that of a native speaker.

The objective of Academic IELTS versus General Training IELTS

There are two versions of the IELTS: The Academic version and the general training version. The Academic Version is intended for those who want to enroll in universities and other institutions of higher education and for professionals such as medical doctors and nurses who want to study or practice in an English-speaking country. The General Training Version is intended for those who are planning to undertake non-academic training , gain work experience, or immigrate to English speaking country.

The Similarities in the Academic and General Training IELTS

The IELTS test will remain by an large the same for both academic as well as general training versions. It is mainly because both potential immigrants and academic aspirants will have the same listening and speaking modules.

The Differences between Academic IELTS and GT IELTS

There are subtle differences between these two versions. The reading and writing modules are different for the Academic and General training  module of the test. Here is a quick look at the differences between academic and General Training  versions of the IELTS examination.

Reading in the Academic IELTS

Reading in the academic version of the test presents the test-taker with, what IELTS authority calls ‘passages of general interest’. So what are passages of general interest? Passages of general interest are passages covering general topics rather than dealing with a specific academic discipline. This is what is provided in all three sections of the academic version of the test. One passage will be provided for each section and each section will have 13-14 questions approximately.

Reading in the General Training IELTS

Section 1 of the IELTS reading module (General Training )

The general training module has survival English in the first section. Survival English that appears in the first section will present the test-taker with Pamphlets, brochures, restaurant menus, and user manuals as ability to read and understand these types of materials will determine the test-takers chances of survival in an English-speaking country.

Section 2 of the IELTS reading module (General Training )

Training or Industrial English proficiency that is tested in the and industrial training Englishsecond section will provide the test-taker with policy documents, user manuals, documents on operating procedures of a company etc. This tests whether the test-taker is capable of reading and understanding work- related documents.

Section 3 of the IELTS reading module (General Training )

The third section of the general module however provides the test-taker with a passage of general interest. The writing section of the test presents the test-taker with two different tasks. Task one in the academic version of the test mandates that the test-taker write a report based on the data provided on a graph, table, chart, diagram or a map whereas the those who are taking the general training version are supposed to write a letter. Tasks two of the general training as well as academic version of the test require the test taker to write an essay.

Computer Delivered IELTS Test or the Paper-Based IELTS Test?

As of now IELTS is available in both computer delivered version and paper-based version. The format and content of the both versions remain the same though there are minor differences in execution. The paper-based version of the test, as the names suggests is delivered using paper and pencil or pen whereas the computer-delivered version is taken on a computer.

Which one you should take ?

If the test-taker is in a hurry computer delivered test will be an excellent option as the results will be out in 5-7 days.  The paper test will be ideal if you are not computer savvy or nervous around them. With computer-delivered on the table, one thing is sure that there will be more tests dates available for the potential test-taker to choose from. But before getting into the test-center, the test-taker is advised to have some practice on the computer to get familiar with the computer-based test.

Should I Use Pen or Pencil for the Paper-Based IELTS Exam?

You are permitted to carry your National identity card (Passport), pen, pencil, Eraser and a bottle of water into the IELTS test center. The bottle should be transparent. The pencil and eraser are intended for the listening and reading section of the IELTS test. As the answers for these two sections are scanned, these two sections must be written using a pencil. If you write the answers with a pen chances are that your answers will be unclear or messy in the scanned versions. For the writing section of the IELTS test however allows us to choose whether we want to write with a pen or a pencil. Using a pen in the test however is not really recommended because if you strike off your errors the answer sheet can be unintelligible or ugly

Should I Take the IELTS Test from British Council or IDP?

IELTS is co-owned by British Council, IELTS Australia (subsidiary of IDP) and Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). While cambridge ESOL is primarily responsible for developing the test, British council and IDP Australia are responsible for administering IELTS examination.

IELTS Examinations are developed by a team of experts from different English-speaking countries; so it does not matter whether you are taking your IELTS test from British council or IDP. The registration and administration procedure for British council and IDP are slightly different from each other as they operate independently from each other in the administration of the IELTS test.

IELTS  vs TOEFL

A lot of students who attend classes at Brooklyn Review and students on online forums ask this question quite regularly. The answer to this question is: Yes, you can! In fact, of late IELTS has become the most popular English language proficiency test for university admissions in the US.

There are a lot of students and even student counselors who still believe that when it comes to the language proficiency test for the college admissions in the US, TOEFL is the only test they can take. It is true that TOEFL used to be the most sought-after test for US college admissions however this is no more the case.

Why IELTS is a preferable test

There are a few reasons as to why TOEFL lost out the primary position to IELTS. Firstly, more US organizations started accepting IELTS. Secondly due to the perception that IELTS test is slightly easier than the TOEFL test more students started migrating to IELTS from TOEFL. The perception that IELTS test is easier than TOEFL predominantly stems from fact that TOEFL is long-winding test than IELTS. For example, the reading section in TOEFL is for 60-100 minutes whereas the IELTS reading sections last only for 60 minutes. The TOEFL listening section lasts for 60-90 minutes while the IELTS listening section is only for 30 minutes and additional 10 minutes for transferring the answers.

So, if you are a student who is planning do MS in the US you can take IELTS instead of TOEFL, however, check with the school or university that you are applying to before making your final decision. Check out the link below for further details about the topic

What are the Differences Between IELTS & TOEFL?

iBT vs PBT

Though both IELTS & TOEFL are language proficiency tests there are a lot of differences in terms of the scope and content of both TOEFL & IELTS. One such difference is that TOEFL is an iBT and IELTS is a PBT or CDT. iBT stands for internet-Based Test where as PBT stands for Pencil and Paper-Based test Where CDT stands for Computer Delivered Test. As the names suggest TOEFL is administered on a computer connected to internet whereas IELTS is conducted using pencil and paper or Using a computer. The computer in the IELTS CDT is not connected via Internet.

IELTS Test Structure

A fair comparison between the IELTS and TOEFL table indicate that almost every module in TOEFL iBT is much longer than the ones in IELTS. The only exception  is writing, wherein the TOEFL writing takes Just 50 minutes whereas the IELTS writing takes 60 minutes. But that does not make TOEFL writing easier, rather it is tougher than IELTS writing because of the integrated writing task.

TOEFL Score

Each sections of TOEFL iBT is scored separately. The number of points received for each section is converted to a scaled score of 0-30, for a combined total possible score of 120 as shown below. The score is valid for 2 years from the time of reporting.

IELTS  is accepted by most Australian, British, Canadian, Irish, New Zealand and South African academic institutions  and over 3,000 academic institutions in the United States, and various professional organizations. It is also a requirement for immigration to Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Utility of IELTS vs TOEFL

Though both IELTS and TOEFL are used by Academic admission panels as well as Immigrations authorities, we can say TOEFL is predominantly designed for testing language proficiency in an academic setting where as IELTS is widely used to measure the English language proficiency of  potential immigrants to English speaking countries as well students who want pursue higher education in these countries.
